Amylin (IAPP)
Amylin, also called islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), derives from an 89-residue protein, is a 37 amino acid pancreatic peptide hormone identified in 1987 by two groups as the major component of diabetes-associated islet amyloid deposits. A pathologic feature of 90% of persons with Type 2 diabetes is the presence of islet amyloid deposits which are thought to contribute to pancreatic B cell dysfunction, either by direct cytotoxicity or by reducing b cell mass.
