Description | The insulin b-chain peptide binds to the class II histocompatibility complex (MHC) allele I-Ag7. Many autoimmune diseases are related to class II proteins encoded by MHC. Type 1 diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a T-cell-mediated disease that causes autoimmunity to destroy pancreatic cells, leading to high blood sugar. This insulin B peptide may be a self-antigen candidate and may cause disease. Immunization of mice with this peptide can cause autoantibodies and meningitis. |
