Description | Somatostatin [SST, GHIH (Growth Hormone Inhibitory Hormone) or SRIF (Growth Hormone Releasing Inhibitory Factor)] is a circulating peptide that exists in two isoforms and is produced in the pancreatic islets, gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system . The fourteen peptide somatostatin-14 (SRIF-14, originally identified somatostatin) and 28 amino acid somatostatin-28 (SRIF-28) have similar biological activities, but different potency. Somatostatin inhibits the release of growth hormone, and growth hormone factor (GRF) stimulates the release of growth hormone. Somatostatin can also inhibit prolactin, thyrotropin, peptide hormones secreted by the pituitary gland, and glucagon and insulin secreted by the pancreas. It also controls the secretion of intestinal hormones and acts as a neurotransmitter |
